Best No-Annual-Fee Travel Credit Cards in 2026

These six no-annual-fee cards cover flexible points, simple travel credits, international benefits, hotel stays, and airline miles.

Travel credit cards compared for a no annual fee guide

Paying no annual fee is easy. Finding a card that works abroad, earns useful rewards, and gives you a clear way to redeem them is harder.

The best no annual fee travel credit cards serve different types of travelers. Wells Fargo Autograph is our best overall pick, but the right card depends on whether you prefer transferable points, simple statement credits, travel benefits, hotel rewards, or airline miles.

Initial card comparison: August 28, 2026. Targeted update: October 6, 2026 (United Gateway offer and spending benefits; Hilton welcome-offer availability)  ·  Offers and terms can change. Check the issuer’s current terms before applying.

Updated October 6, 2026: Added a spending example and international-travel checklist; clarified that both Autograph and VentureOne support transfers. The original comparison date and targeted offer checks above remain separate from this content update.

Choose the reward you will actually use

A $0 annual fee is only one part of the decision. Start with the way you want to pay for your next trip:

  • Book with different airlines and hotels: Autograph earns across several everyday and travel categories. Compare VentureOne if a particular transfer partner makes it useful to you; transfers are available on both cards.
  • Book normally and offset the bill: BofA Travel Rewards offers travel and dining statement credits. Check what purchases qualify rather than assuming all point redemptions have the same value.
  • Want lounge access or protections: Read Altitude Connect’s enrollment, visit and covered-trip rules. “Travel benefits” does not mean every delay, cancellation or guest visit is covered.
  • Usually fly United or stay at Hilton: A brand card can fit, but calculate the benefits you will actually use. A higher points multiplier is not automatically a higher cash return.

For study abroad or a first U.S. credit card, use the student-card guide before treating a general travel card as a starter card.

Before You Apply

Before choosing an offer, check issuer application and bonus eligibility rules. Then confirm which purchases count toward the welcome offer and when its clock starts; the largest headline bonus is not useful if the required spending does not fit your plans.

  • Confirm the two $0 fees. Every card selected here has a $0 annual fee and no foreign transaction fee, but check the issuer’s live terms before applying.
  • Choose your redemption method first. Transfer partners require more effort, while statement credits and fixed-value redemptions are simpler.
  • Check caps and spending thresholds. Altitude Connect caps its 4X gas and EV-charging category at $1,000 per quarter; United Gateway’s two first checked-bag certificates and award-discount perks require $10,000 in purchases in a calendar year.
  • Treat credit guidance as an estimate. Approval depends on the full application, and issuers rarely publish one universal credit-score cutoff.

What does the same travel budget earn?

Illustrative annual spending: $18,000 total, including $2,400 in direct travel purchases, $3,600 in other qualifying Autograph 3X categories, and $12,000 elsewhere. No portal purchases, welcome bonuses, relationship bonuses, interest or fees are included.

Rewards earned under the same spending assumptions
CardCalculationAnnual rewards
Wells Fargo Autograph$6,000 × 3 + $12,000 × 130,000 points
Capital One VentureOne$18,000 × 1.2522,500 miles
BofA Travel Rewards$18,000 × 1.527,000 points

At a purely illustrative value of 1 cent per point or mile, those totals would be $300, $225 and $270. That assumption is for comparison, not a valuation guarantee for every redemption. Cash, travel credits and transfers can produce different results. Change the spending mix and the ranking can change too.

Compare Autograph and VentureOne side by side, including fees, rewards and restrictions.

When does 5X cost more than 3X?

You find a hotel for $500 directly, but the same booking is $525 in a card’s travel portal. Does the higher rewards rate cover the difference? Compare the amount paid with the value of rewards you will actually use.

Illustrative hotel booking: the same room, dates, taxes, fees and cancellation terms.
Booking choiceAmount charged nowRewards earnedCost after assumed rewards value
Direct booking with Autograph$5001,500 points at 3X
$15 at 1 cent each
$485
Capital One Travel with VentureOne$5252,625 miles at 5X
$26.25 at 1 cent each
$498.75

Result: direct booking is $13.75 cheaper after rewards in this example. The portal earns $11.25 more in rewards but charges $25 more upfront. Rewards are earned later; neither booking receives an immediate discount at checkout.

Break-even: $500 × (1 − 0.03) ÷ (1 − 0.05) = $510.53, rounded. With these assumptions, the portal can cost only about $10.53 more before the extra rewards stop covering the difference.

Calculation assumptions: A hypothetical booking, not a live hotel quote. The full charge qualifies for the stated 3X or 5X rate and is paid with the named card; the balance is paid in full. Each point or mile is assigned an illustrative value of 1 cent. Welcome bonuses, promotions, hotel loyalty earnings/status, credits, interest and reward-rounding differences are excluded. A different redemption value or cancellation policy changes the comparison. Earning rates checked October 11, 2026 against Autograph’s terms and VentureOne’s product page.

Six restrictions to check before you book

The useful question is not just how many points you earn, but whether the booking and redemption you plan to make qualify.

Targeted restrictions checked October 11, 2026; use each linked issuer’s current terms.
CardCondition that changes the valueWhat to do
Autograph3X travel depends on the merchant category. For the specific Redeem for Purchases option, the transaction must be at least $1 and your rewards must cover its entire amount.Check how the charge posts. Do not treat that full-purchase redemption rule as a rule for every redemption option.
VentureOneThe advertised 5X hotel rate requires Capital One Travel. Credits for past eligible travel purchases must be requested within 90 days of the charge posting.Compare the same room and cancellation terms, then set a reminder for the redemption window.
BofA Travel RewardsTravel credits apply to eligible travel and dining purchases; they are not unrestricted cash redemptions at the same value.Choose the redemption type before valuing your points. An independent booking can qualify; a portal booking is not required for the travel-credit feature.
Altitude Connect5X requires prepaid hotels or car rentals in the U.S. Bank Travel Center. Priority Pass requires enrollment, limited to one account cardholder.Enroll before your trip and check the benefit guide’s visit and guest limits. Having the card alone does not complete enrollment.
Hilton Honors Amex7X Hilton earning requires eligible purchases directly with Hilton hotels/resorts. The 5X restaurant, supermarket and gas categories are U.S.-only.Do not budget 5X for dining overseas; other eligible purchases earn 3X. Compare a portal stay with the direct Hilton rate and benefits.
United GatewayTwo bag certificates require $10,000 in calendar-year purchases. The primary cardholder must pay for the ticket with this card, add their MileagePlus number and apply the certificate at checkout.Allow 6–8 weeks for certificates after qualifying. Use them on United/United Express-operated flights within 12 months of issue; partner-operated codeshares are excluded.

Before paying: compare the total charge, refund rules and usable rewards together. If a benefit requires enrollment, a qualifying payment method or a certificate, complete that step before relying on it.

Which Card Fits Your Travel Style?

Decision guide for choosing a no-annual-fee travel credit card
  • Choose Autograph for broad travel and everyday bonus categories.
  • Compare VentureOne with Autograph when transfer partners matter: both support transfers, but partner lists and your spending mix can change the better choice.
  • Choose BofA Travel Rewards for uncomplicated statement credits.
  • Choose Altitude Connect for travel benefits and direct-travel earning.
  • Choose Hilton Honors Amex or United Gateway only when that brand matches your actual trips.

Check the costs before booking abroad

No annual fee does not mean no costs. Before an international trip, check the foreign transaction fee separately from the annual fee. For scale, a hypothetical 3% foreign transaction fee on $3,000 of purchases is $90—even on a card with no annual fee. The cards selected here have no foreign transaction fee, but interest, cash-advance charges and other costs can still apply.

Use the portal-versus-direct calculation above before paying extra for a higher rewards rate. Bring a backup payment method and check card acceptance for your destination.

If you are replacing an annual-fee card, use the keep, downgrade or cancel decision guide. If simple cash rewards fit better, compare a two-card cash-back setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are no-annual-fee travel cards worth it?

They can be, especially for travelers taking a few trips per year. A $0 fee lowers the pressure to recover an annual cost, although premium credits, lounge access, and comprehensive protections are less common.

If you are comparing a no-fee card with keeping a card that charges an annual fee, check our 2026 annual-fee changes and renewal guide before deciding.

Can a no-annual-fee card also have no foreign transaction fee?

Yes. Every card in this guide has both a $0 annual fee and no foreign transaction fee. Network acceptance still matters, so carrying a Visa or Mastercard backup can be useful.

Can I earn transferable points without an annual fee?

Yes. Wells Fargo Autograph and Capital One VentureOne allow eligible points or miles to transfer to participating loyalty programs. Partner lists and transfer ratios can change, and transfers are generally irreversible.

Is cash back better for occasional travelers?

Sometimes. Cash back is easier to value and does not require award searches. Transferable points can be more useful when you already understand the partner program and have a specific redemption in mind.

For a side-by-side cash-back strategy, see our two-card cash-back setup guide.

What credit score is usually needed?

Most cards here generally target good to excellent credit, but issuers do not publish one universal minimum. Income, debt, recent applications, and payment history also affect approval.

If you are applying with no credit history, start with our first-card guide before choosing a travel card.

How We Chose These Cards

CardTuned compared cards with an ongoing $0 annual fee that were open to U.S. consumers on August 28, 2026. We evaluated foreign transaction fees, travel and everyday earning, redemption flexibility, transfer partners, protections, ease of use, restrictions, caps, and current issuer terms. Rankings reflect reader fit, not compensation.

Bottom Line

Wells Fargo Autograph is the strongest all-around option for most travelers because it combines broad 3X earning, flexible redemptions, and no foreign transaction fee. VentureOne is worth comparing when its specific transfer partners fit your plans, while Altitude Connect stands out for benefits. Choose the rewards system you will actually use.

Editorial update — October 11, 2026: Added a hypothetical portal-versus-direct hotel calculation with a break-even price, plus an issuer-sourced table of booking, redemption and benefit-use restrictions. Those specific conditions and the calculation inputs were checked October 11, 2026. This is not a new verification of every welcome offer, APR or benefit.
