You opened a card in January 2022, received its bonus that April and closed it in August 2025. Is March 2026 late enough to apply again? An opening-based clock and a bonus-based clock give different answers. A restriction on previous cardholders may have no stated reset date at all.
Credit card application rules differ by issuer, product and offer. This guide covers the questions to check before applying. Published product terms and reported application practices are labeled separately.
The short answer
An application restriction affects the account. A bonus restriction affects the incentive. A velocity limit describes how quickly new applications or accounts may be accepted. Keep those labels next to every number you record.
Credit card application rules: published terms to check
These are product-specific examples, not promises that all cards from the same issuer share the rule. Card names identify the terms being discussed; this is not a recommendation or a comparison of their fees and benefits.
| Issuer and example | What the published terms say | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Chase — Sapphire Preferred (card + bonus) | Current ownership blocks this card; prior ownership or a prior bonus may affect bonus eligibility | Ownership and bonus history |
| Capital One — Venture (bonus) | Bonus unavailable after a Venture or Venture X new-cardmember bonus within 48 months | Bonus receipt date and product |
| Citi — AAdvantage Platinum Select (bonus) | 48-month bonus restriction, including specified converted-account history | Bonus receipt and conversion history |
| Citi — Strata Premier (bonus) | Current or previous Strata Premier or Premier ownership excludes the new-account bonus | Whether you ever held either product |
| Wells Fargo — Active Cash (card + intro offers) | Additional Wells Fargo-branded consumer card may not qualify after an opening in the last 4 months; separate same-product offer restriction | All relevant opening dates |
| U.S. Bank — Altitude Connect (bonus) | Previous new-account bonus on this product within five years excludes the bonus | Bonus receipt date |
Chase: do not substitute 5/24 for the offer terms
The widely reported 5/24 screen concerns recently opened accounts. Sapphire Preferred’s published bonus wording asks a separate question about your history with that card. Being below a reported account threshold does not resolve that wording. Chase also says it may weigh how many cards you have opened and closed when assessing bonus eligibility. Save the offer attached to the actual application channel. 7 1

American Express: read the eligibility warning
Amex’s U.S. site says offers vary and eligibility is not universal. Specialist reporting describes restrictions involving prior cards, related product families and account history, as well as application warnings about bonus eligibility. These reports are useful preparation, but eligibility depends on the specific offer. Do not assume a universal lifetime restriction or a guaranteed reset after a fixed number of years. Review the terms and any warning shown to you before proceeding. 8 9
Capital One: identify the related cards named
The Venture restriction currently names both Venture and Venture X bonuses. That does not establish that every Venture-family product has identical wording in both directions. Record the exact product you want and every related product the offer names. 3
Citi: one bank, different clocks
The AAdvantage Platinum Select example measures bonus history over 48 months. Strata Premier’s current page instead excludes current or previous holders of Strata Premier or Premier. An old “all Citi bonuses reset after four years” summary would therefore give the wrong answer for the latter. Citi also reserves room to assess card-opening, closing and usage history. 4 2
Wells Fargo: separate the two tests
The Active Cash page’s four-month language concerns an additional Wells Fargo-branded consumer card. Its separate introductory-offer wording concerns having the same product, or having opened it within 48 months—even if closed with a zero balance. That same-product restriction can affect introductory APRs, fees and rewards offers, not just the cash bonus. Note the word opened; this is not the Citi example’s bonus-receipt clock. 5
U.S. Bank: check the specific product
Altitude Connect’s five-year lookback concerns a new-account bonus for that product. It should not be rewritten as a five-year ban on opening any U.S. Bank card. 6
What about the familiar application “speed limits”?
Frequent Miler reports selected widely discussed spacing rules: Amex spacing commonly summarized as one credit card in five days and two in 90 days; Citi as one in eight days and two in 65 days; and Bank of America’s “2/3/4” as two consumer cards in two months, three in 12 and four in 24. Its coverage also describes Barclays restrictions as inconsistently applied. These are secondary reports, not independently confirmed universal issuer policies. 10
Treat those numbers as reasons to investigate a recent application, rather than instructions to submit another one on the first mathematically available day. When comparing credit card application rules, keep application dates, approval dates and opening dates separate in your records.
For Bank of America and Discover, check the current application disclosures for existing-card and repeat-card restrictions. Do not assume an online shorthand covers every product, or import Capital One rules automatically into a Discover-branded offer.
A practical example: the wrong date changes your answer
Once you have checked eligibility, review how welcome-offer spending requirements are counted before committing purchases to a bonus deadline.
Build a five-minute application file
- List the exact card, issuer and application channel you intend to use.
- Save the offer and eligibility terms with a date. Include the fine print, not just the headline incentive.
- Record opening, bonus receipt, closing and conversion dates for relevant accounts. Before a product change, ask whether it creates a new account and how it affects offer eligibility; Citi’s AAdvantage terms illustrate why conversion history can matter. 4
- Check your credit reports for recent accounts and mark authorized-user accounts separately.
- Confirm that planned ordinary spending can meet any offer requirement without adding debt you cannot repay.
- If a rule is unclear, ask the issuer which event starts the clock and which related products it includes.

If the application is declined
Read the notice before applying again. CFPB explains that a lender must provide specific reasons or tell you about your right to request them. A denial is not proof that the internet shorthand caused it. Ask about the stated issue, correct inaccurate information if necessary, and distinguish reconsideration of an existing application from submitting a new one. 11
