Major Credit Card Deadlines to Track in Q4 2026

Track Q4 2026 credit card deadlines for rotating categories, Amex and Chase credits, and year-end benefits before they expire.

Card terms and benefit rules can change; confirm current issuer terms before acting.

Q4 2026 credit card deadlines do not all follow the same clock. Benefits may expire according to the calendar rather than your statement closing date, creating separate cutoffs for rotating-category activation, monthly credits, quarterly credits, semiannual credits, and benefits that reset on January 1.

Activation is only one step: track how much eligible spending remains before the cap using our cash-back cap guide, then assign purchases with a two-card cash-back setup.

This calendar covers publicly documented deadlines on widely used U.S. consumer cards. It does not include targeted offers, welcome-offer spending deadlines, cardmember-anniversary benefits, or account-specific promotions. Those dates differ by person and should be checked separately.

Start here: activate Chase Freedom by December 14, make final eligible purchases early enough to process by December 31, and check monthly, quarterly and semiannual credits separately. They do not all follow the same clock.

What to Know Now

  • Activate Chase Freedom’s Q4 categories by December 14, 2026.
  • Chase Freedom and Discover Q4 bonus-category spending ends December 31, 2026.
  • U.S. Bank Cash+ uses two different cutoffs: changes to an advance selection close five days before the quarter begins, while a first selection for the current quarter closes five days before the quarter ends.
  • Several American Express and Chase credits have monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or calendar-year periods ending in Q4.
  • A purchase made on the final day may miss the deadline if the merchant processes it in January.

September 30: Finish Q3 Rotating-Category Spending

Discover’s Q3 2026 categories cover gas stations, transportation, and drugstores through September 30 on up to $1,500 in activated purchases. Discover states that the transaction date must fall within the promotion, and online purchases can use the shipping date as the transaction date.

Chase’s Q3 categories also end September 30. Its activation deadline was September 14, so a cardholder who did not activate is already too late. Cardholders who activated can continue making qualifying Q3 purchases through the end of the month, subject to merchant submission and the combined $1,500 cap.

October 1: Q4 Categories Begin

Under Chase’s official Q4 category announcement, Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex move to grocery stores, dining, and qualifying American Red Cross donations. After activation, cardholders earn 5% total cash back on up to $1,500 in combined Q4 purchases. Walmart, Target, wholesale clubs, and warehouse clubs are excluded from Chase’s grocery-store category.

For the spending-cap math and store exclusions, see whether groceries or dining should get the $1,500 Chase cap.

Discover’s Q4 categories are restaurants, entertainment, and utilities. Eligible Discover it and Discover More cardholders can earn 5% on up to $1,500 in activated purchases from October 1 through December 31.

Discover says the promotion begins October 1 or on the date of activation, whichever is later. Unlike Chase’s stated retroactive treatment for an on-time quarterly activation, Discover purchases made before activation do not receive the Q4 rate. Discover also warns that its public calendar may not apply to some cards after the Capital One merger, so confirm eligibility in the account.

The Last Day of Each Month: Use It or Lose It

Monthly credits create three Q4 deadlines: October 31, November 30, and December 31. The final eligible transaction must process during that month’s benefit period.

Major examples include:

  • American Express Gold Card: up to $10 in monthly dining statement credits and up to $7 in monthly Dunkin’ credits after required enrollment.
  • American Express Platinum Card: up to $25 in monthly digital-entertainment credits and a monthly Walmart+ membership credit. Platinum also provides monthly Uber Cash after the card is added to an eligible U.S. Uber account, with the regular monthly amount plus an additional December amount.
  • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card: up to $25 per month in eligible worldwide restaurant statement credits, for up to $300 per calendar year.

Do not wait until late evening on the last day. A restaurant, subscription, or online merchant may submit the charge after the calendar changes. Also confirm enrollment before spending; enrollment completed after a purchase may not make the earlier charge eligible.

December 14: Activate Chase Freedom Q4

December 14 is the hard activation deadline for the Chase Freedom Q4 2026 categories. The categories cover grocery stores, dining, and eligible American Red Cross donations through December 31, with a $1,500 combined spending cap.

Chase states that an activation completed after October 1 but by the deadline can apply to qualifying purchases made earlier in the quarter. The safest approach is still to activate before the first Q4 purchase and confirm activation in the account.

U.S. Bank Cash+: Two Different Five-Day Cutoffs

Under U.S. Bank’s Cash+ category FAQ, cardholders can select two 5% categories and one 2% category each quarter. The 5% rate applies to the first $2,000 in combined eligible purchases in the two selected 5% categories. Selection is optional; without one, eligible purchases earn no more than 1%.

U.S. Bank’s public instructions conflict for an advance Q4 change. The general rule says changes close five calendar days before the quarter begins, which would imply September 26, 2026. However, the issuer’s published quarterly table lists August 27 for October–December selections. Because those official materials disagree, do not rely on an inferred September date; check the Rewards Center or contact U.S. Bank before attempting a change.

If a cardholder never selected categories for the current quarter, U.S. Bank says a first selection is available until five days before the quarter ends. That late selection is not retroactive and can take up to three business days to take effect. Do not treat December 31 as the registration deadline; use the final cutoff displayed in the Rewards Center.

Making a first selection in late December salvages only the remaining days of the quarter. It does not reopen the earlier window for changing categories already submitted for Q4. The safest approach is to choose categories as soon as the Rewards Center opens and save the confirmation; do not wait for the inferred five-day cutoff.

December 31: Rotating Categories Close

Chase and Discover both close their Q4 5% periods on December 31.

For Chase, the purchase must post to the account by the end of the calendar quarter. For Discover, the transaction date must be within the offer period; the issuer warns that an online purchase can be dated when an item ships. A December 31 order is therefore not a reliable way to use remaining cap space.

The maximum total reward at 5% is $75 on $1,500 for each card. That is not necessarily $75 of incremental value, because the same spending would have earned a base reward on another card.

December 31: Quarterly American Express Credits

The American Express Platinum Card benefits page lists these Q4 allowances:

  • up to $100 in statement credits for eligible purchases at qualifying U.S. Resy restaurants or through eligible Resy channels, after enrollment;
  • up to $75 in statement credits for eligible U.S. lululemon purchases, after enrollment.

These benefits reset quarterly. Unused Q4 capacity does not increase the following quarter’s allowance. American Express also relies on the merchant’s transaction-processing date, so a purchase submitted in January can count against the next period instead.

December 31: Semiannual Credits

Several high-value benefits use January–June and July–December periods.

American Express Platinum hotel credit

Eligible U.S. Consumer and Business Platinum accounts can receive up to $300 in statement credits for each half of the year, up to $600 annually, on qualifying prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings through American Express Travel. The Hotel Collection requires a minimum two-night stay.

For the July–December allowance, complete an eligible prepaid booking by December 31 and confirm the applicable benefit period in American Express’s public Platinum terms or the benefits dashboard. Travel dates may fall later, subject to the benefit terms.

American Express Gold Resy credit

After enrollment, Gold cardmembers can receive up to $50 in statement credits from July through December on eligible Resy purchases. The benefit provides up to $100 per calendar year across two semiannual periods.

Chase Sapphire Reserve dining and StubHub credits

Sapphire Reserve offers up to $150 in statement credits from July through December at restaurants participating in Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables. Merchant eligibility matters; ordinary restaurant spending does not automatically qualify.

The card also offers up to $150 in July–December statement credits for qualifying purchases made directly with StubHub or viagogo. Activation is required, and purchases must be made directly on StubHub.com or viagogo.com. Merchant-processing delays can move a purchase into the next period.

December 31: Calendar-Year Benefits Reset

Calendar-year credits are broader than monthly or quarterly benefits but still expire if unused. Platinum Card examples include the annual airline incidental fee credit, CLEAR+ credit, Equinox credit, and Oura Ring credit. Each benefit has separate eligibility, enrollment, and purchase-channel rules.

Chase Sapphire Reserve also has benefits tied to the calendar year, including its 2026 credit for select prepaid hotel bookings through Chase Travel. The card’s regular $300 travel credit follows the account-anniversary year rather than the calendar year. Check the benefits dashboard instead of assuming every Reserve benefit ends December 31.

December 31: Activate Chase Sapphire Preferred Apple TV

Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders are eligible for one complimentary year of Apple TV when the subscription is activated by December 31, 2026. Use Chase’s official activation link while signed in. Chase publicly confirms the December 31 deadline; account-specific activation steps appear after sign-in.

This is an activation deadline, not a requirement to watch or use the entire subscription by year-end.

Deadlines This Page Does Not Track

Three important deadline types are personal rather than public:

  • Welcome offers: the spending window is based on the account-opening date.
  • Anniversary-year credits and certificates: the reset date follows the individual account year.
  • Targeted issuer offers: enrollment and expiration dates can vary by account.

Check each card’s benefits dashboard and recent statements for these dates. A public calendar cannot safely infer them.

Existing Citi Custom Cash cardholders have no quarterly category-activation deadline. Citi stopped accepting new applications on May 28, 2026, while existing accounts remain usable; confirm current earning rules in the account terms. Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards is also absent because its choice-category structure does not use a comparable quarterly enrollment cutoff.

Q4 Action Checklist

  1. Finish any planned Q3 rotating-category spending before September 30.
  2. Activate Chase and Discover Q4 categories before making October purchases.
  3. Set reminders for the final day of October and November monthly benefits.
  4. Activate Chase Freedom Q4 no later than December 14.
  5. For U.S. Bank Cash+, distinguish between changing an advance selection before the quarter and making a first selection before the current quarter’s final cutoff; allow three business days for a late first selection to take effect.
  6. Review unused quarterly, semiannual, and annual credits during the first week of December.
  7. Complete eligible purchases early enough to post within the applicable benefit period.
  8. Check personal welcome-offer and anniversary deadlines separately.
