What Happens to Your Rewards When You Close a Credit Card?

Closing a card can forfeit rewards or change how you keep them. Check the account holding your points, the closure terms and the redemption deadline.

You are ready to close a card, but 40,000 reward points are still attached to it. Moving the next subscription payment is not enough. What happens to rewards when you close a credit card depends on where they live and what closure does to that account.

Identify which account holds the rewards

On a small screen, swipe across the table to see every column.

A card with an airline logo can involve two separate ledgers: the issuer’s spending record and the airline’s mileage balance. Record posted rewards, pending rewards and any expected bonus separately. A pending amount is not the same as an available redemption.

Amex and Chase illustrate why one deadline is unsafe

Amex’s current customer-service guidance says that canceling a Membership Rewards account without another eligible Card or Checking Account forfeits unused points immediately. It also notes that New York Card Members may be able to redeem for 90 days after notice of account closure, subject to the applicable terms. Confirm your linked products and any exception before closing; there is no universal post-closure redemption window. 1

The Chase Freedom rewards agreement provides at least 30 days to use points after closure for reasons outside its immediate-forfeiture provisions. Misuse, fraud and specified other circumstances can trigger immediate loss. The agreement also permits certain moves to another eligible Ultimate Rewards card, subject to its restrictions. 2

The practical lesson is not to pick the more generous deadline and apply it to every bank. Read the agreement for the card you are closing. A general marketing article saying points last while an account is open is less precise than the closure provisions in that agreement.

Airline miles may remain, but their expiration protection can change

American Airlines provides a concrete example. Its credit-card terms say closure brings the member back under the mileage-activity requirement. To retain the miles, the terms call for earning or redeeming activity within four months of closure or within 24 months of the last qualifying activity, whichever is later. 3

That is a different problem from an immediate bank-points forfeiture. Confirm the expiration date in the loyalty account and plan an eligible activity if needed. Do not assume another airline uses American’s timing or that merely signing in counts as activity.

Make a rewards exit plan in the right order

  1. Save the current rewards balance, pending activity and applicable closure terms.
  2. Ask what happens if this specific card closes today, including whether another account preserves the rewards.
  3. If using a permitted internal move, verify that the receiving account is eligible and that the points actually arrived.
  4. If redeeming, choose an option you genuinely want and confirm completion before closing.
  5. After closure, inspect the final statement and any separate loyalty-account expiration date.

If the card is already closed

Contact the issuer promptly with the closure date and rewards record. Ask whether the agreement provides a redemption period or an applicable exception, and get the last usable date. Do not wait for the next routine statement to find out. A reinstatement is not something to assume.

If you have not yet chosen between keeping, changing or closing the card, our annual-fee decision guide covers the broader renewal question. Here, the finish line is narrower: know where every reward balance will be after the change.
