Lost or Stolen Credit Card: What to Do in the First Hour

Lock a missing credit card, report theft or unauthorized charges, arrange replacement and preserve dispute records with this first-hour checklist.

Empty tan wallet and a smartphone on a cafe table.

Your wallet is gone, and you cannot tell whether the card is at a restaurant or in someone else’s hands. For a lost or stolen credit card, start by limiting new use and contacting the issuer. You can reconstruct the rest of the day after the account is protected.

First few minutes: secure the account and use a trusted contact

Use a number from a previous statement or the issuer’s official website if you no longer have the card. Avoid following a link from an unexpected “fraud alert” message. If your phone is also missing, use another trusted device or telephone.

Read what the lock actually blocks. Citi, for example, says Quick Lock blocks new purchases and cash advances while allowing recurring transactions and certain other activity to continue. That is a product-specific example, not a universal promise that locking stops every charge. 2

During the call: make the report specific

  • Say whether the physical card is missing and whether you see unauthorized activity.
  • Identify suspicious amounts and dates without guessing that every unfamiliar merchant label is fraud.
  • Ask whether the issuer will replace the card number, what happens to digital-wallet access and when replacement is expected.
  • Record when you reported the problem, the case number and any follow-up instructions.

Keep sensitive account details inside the issuer’s secure process. Your own working note can identify the card by issuer and last four digits; it does not need the full number or security code.

Report promptly even if your issuer advertises zero liability. This guide concerns U.S. credit cards; debit-card timing and liability rules are different. 1

Before the hour is over: preserve records and protect upcoming bills

Report recordSave the case number, reporting time and replacement instructions.
Transaction recordSave statements and the dates and amounts of disputed activity.
Payment checkList imminent subscriptions and confirm your card-bill payment setup.
Suggested order of work, not statutory minute-by-minute deadlines.

Replacement may require updates to stored payment details. Start with essential bills due soon, and ask the issuer which recurring merchants or wallet credentials may update automatically. Check the next transaction instead of assuming either that everything transfers or that every payment stops.

The bank transfer that pays your credit-card bill is a separate arrangement from a merchant charging the card. Verify that the next required payment is still scheduled and funded. Reporting theft does not erase legitimate purchases you already owe.

If an unauthorized charge appears on a statement

Follow the issuer’s dispute process and preserve written-notice rights. Regulation Z’s billing-error process generally requires a written notice received at the designated billing-inquiries address within 60 days after the first statement showing the error was sent. Include enough information to identify your name and account and, as far as possible, the error’s type, date, amount and your reason for disputing it. Keep a copy. An electronic notice can satisfy the written-notice requirement if the issuer’s billing-rights statement expressly accepts it through the method you use. 4

Continue paying undisputed amounts on time. Confirm how the issuer has treated the disputed balance and the next amount due rather than withholding the entire bill. 3

The first-hour finish line

You should have a recorded report, a replacement plan and a list of charges or payments requiring follow-up. Then monitor statements until the replacement and any dispute are resolved. If your main question is how to keep the account secure afterward, revisit the alerts and payment checks in our card setup guide.
