NEWS & OFFERS · TERMS VERIFIED OCTOBER 17, 2026

United Premier 2027 planning now has a confirmed official framework. In its October 13, 2026 announcement, United says it is removing the Premier qualifying flights pathway, setting PQP thresholds and retaining a minimum of four United or United Express flights. That last condition matters even if you earn substantial PQP from a card.1

The qualification thresholds starting January 1, 2027

Premier tierRequired PQPStarter PQP for eligible cardmembers
Silver6,000300
Gold12,000600
Platinum18,000900
1K32,0001,600

The four United or United Express flights are still required in 2027. These thresholds describe qualification activity during 2027; do not confuse them with the rules used for 2026 activity to establish 2027 status.1

The practical change is that taking more inexpensive segments no longer supplies the former PQF-plus-PQP route. Count expected qualifying points and the four-flight minimum separately in your travel plan.

Starter PQP now requires an eligible card

United’s terms require an active eligible card account open by December 31, 2026, remaining open and not in default at fulfillment. The deposit is based on Premier status held on February 1, 2027. Trial-status members and United Debit Rewards cardmembers are excluded, along with specified international products.1

The listed deposit equals 5% of the new tier threshold. For Premier 1K, that is 1,600 PQP—not 1,200 or the earlier 1,400 figure shown elsewhere on United’s historical updates page. Always match the deposit table to the correct year.

What the card limits do—and do not—mean

United’s announcement lists card-spending PQP caps of 1,000 for Explorer, 18,000 for Quest and 32,000 for Club. The card-specific earning rate, eligible purchases and annual cap still control. Reaching a card cap does not waive the four-flight requirement.1

A high cap is capacity, not a deposit you receive for holding the card. Before moving spending, calculate the actual purchase volume required under your card’s terms, the ordinary rewards you would give up elsewhere and any additional annual fee.

A starter-PQP planning example

Assume a qualifying Gold member receives the listed 600 starter PQP and aims for Gold again under the 12,000-PQP threshold. The remaining target would be 11,400 PQP before other eligible activity. The four-flight requirement remains separate.

This is a planning illustration, not a promise that a particular account receives the deposit. Someone without an eligible card by the stated date should not subtract 600 from their target simply because they held Gold status.

PlusPoints has a separate effective date

For travel on or after February 1, 2027, United says PlusPoints upgrade pricing will vary with demand and available seats. That change is separate from the January 1 qualification change and the December 31 card-eligibility checkpoint.1

A dynamic system does not establish that every upgrade will cost more or less. Check the quoted requirement for the actual itinerary rather than applying a historical fixed chart to all future trips.

Your year-end checklist

  • Separate 2026 qualification activity from your 2027 travel plan.
  • Confirm eligible card ownership by December 31 if relying on starter PQP.
  • Use the status held on February 1, 2027 for the deposit assumption.
  • Keep at least four qualifying United or United Express flights in the plan.
  • Review card earning rates and actual upgrade quotes before reallocating spending.
