Credit Card Grace Period: What to Pay to Avoid Purchase Interest

Follow an $800 statement and a $200 later purchase to see which balance to pay, what can end purchase grace, and how to restore it.

Your statement says $800 is due, but your app now shows $1,000. Which amount do you need to pay to avoid purchase interest?

For an ordinary account with an active credit card grace period, start with the statement’s payment requirement. Follow Jamie’s hypothetical billing cycle to see where the later $200 belongs—and what changes if you carry debt or use a special payment plan.

What does a credit card grace period mean?

It is the window between the end of a billing cycle and the payment due date during which an eligible purchase balance can be paid without interest. It is not permission to pay after the deadline. Not every card offers one, and a purchase grace period does not automatically cover every type of transaction. 1

Jamie’s statement is the bill for a completed cycle. Its payment deadline stays with that bill; a later purchase does not move the deadline forward.

NEXT STATEMENT

The $200 purchase belongs to the next statement cycle, with that statement’s due date.

App balance after the new purchase: $800 + $200 = $1,000.

Jamie is hypothetical. Assume an active purchase grace period, no older unpaid debt, no special plans and no other activity. These dates are illustrations, not an issuer’s schedule. The $200 is not part of the October 5 bill.

Regulation Z generally requires procedures that ensure credit-card statements are mailed or delivered at least 21 days before payment is due. That is a statement-delivery rule, not a promise that every purchase gets exactly 21 interest-free days. 3

Which amount should you pay?

For Jamie’s ordinary account, $800 is the statement obligation; the app can show $1,000 after the later purchase. The extra $200 does not normally have to be paid early to satisfy the October statement’s grace-period condition. 2

Use the amount and instructions on the statement, with any payments or special-plan settings accounted for. For a fuller explanation of the app’s different balance figures, see our statement balance vs. current balance guide.

What happens if you pay less than the required amount?

What if Jamie pays only part of the $800 statement? That can end purchase grace. The unpaid balance can accrue interest, and the later $200 purchase can become interest-bearing from its transaction date. Paying on time and paying enough to preserve grace are separate tests. 1

Transactions and plans that need a separate check

Cash advances

Purchase grace usually does not apply to cash advances. Interest generally starts at the transaction date, and the agreement may impose a separate fee. Paying purchase charges in full does not make the advance interest-free. 1

A promotional balance transfer

If keeping purchase grace would require repaying the entire transfer, consider paying for new spending another way rather than assuming the minimum payment preserves it. Our 0% APR purchase-card guide covers the separate decision of financing new purchases.

An installment plan with a special payment amount

Chase Pay Over Time after purchase is one product-specific example. Its interest saving balance option includes the monthly plan amount plus recent statement purchases, letting you avoid interest on new purchases without paying the whole plan off early. The plan still carries a fixed monthly fee. 5

Use the payment amount your own plan specifies. Chase also says an outstanding balance transfer is included in its interest saving balance, even when the transfer has a 0% promotional rate. Do not assume the plan setting leaves every promotional balance outstanding. 5

Deferred-interest financing

A “no interest if paid in full” promotion has its own payoff deadline. Failing its conditions can trigger previously deferred interest; minimum payments alone may not finish the balance in time. That deadline can differ from the monthly bill’s due date. Treat it separately from both purchase grace and a standard 0% APR period. 8

Why can another interest charge appear after payment?

An interest-bearing balance may keep accruing interest between the statement cutoff and the date the issuer receives your payment. The next bill can therefore contain interest that was not on the bill you paid. This is often called residual or trailing interest. 6

If Jamie has already begun carrying interest-bearing debt, paying the printed bill on October 30 may leave interest accrued after the October 5 cutoff. Ask for the payoff amount for the payment date and check the next statement. Closing an account does not erase the debt.

How do you restore your credit card grace period?

Your agreement sets the number of full, timely billing-cycle payments required. CFPB’s contract guidance specifically tells readers to check that number, so there is no universal promise that a single payment immediately resets every account. 7

Until you have a clear answer, avoid adding purchases that would immediately accrue interest if another affordable payment method is available. Continue making required payments on time. If using autopay, check both the selected balance setting and the funds available to cover it.

For Jamie’s original example, the $800 statement is the bill to satisfy by October 30; the later $200 is checked with the next statement. If carried debt or a special plan changes that setup, confirm the required payment and whether purchase grace is active before spending again.
